Frank Schier, founder of Rock River Trail, has lost battle with cancer

Frank Schier Founder Rock River Trail Rockford IllinoisWe are saddened to report that Frank Schier, founder of the Rock River Trail Initiative, our colleague and dear friend, has died following his heroic battle with cancer.

Frank’s love of the Rock River, the river communities, and the wonderful people who live and work along the river, was evident in his personal interests, his newspaper “The Rock River Times”, his support of conservation and river stewardship, and his vision for the Rock River Trail.

Launched in 2010, The Rock River Trail wouldn’t exist without Frank’s vision, hard work and tenacity. This photo of Frank, proudly holding the first road sign for marking the Rock River Trail Scenic and Historic Route in Illinois and Wisconsin, was taken at the October 2013 meeting of the Rock River Trail Initiative Council held in Byron, Illinois.

Honoring Frank’s Legacy

The Rock River Trail grand opening will be held in Beloit, WI on June 3, 2017 and it is anticipated that at the ceremony Frank Schier’s legacy will be recognized and honored in a significant way. Learn more about the grand opening here.
